The winds blew and the sailing was fast at the Triangle Model Yacht Club Regatta held May 14-15, 2005
.

  • Gerry Cobley wins Triangle MYC Regatta.
  • Skip Allen makes a big splash as he returns after a 2 year hiatus from racing.
  • Chris Kakavas continues to be one of the leaders.
  • Rich Hawley improved his position as the regatta progressed.
  • Jack Wubbe new to EC-12s, in his second regatta was impressive.
  • Scott Vernon in his quiet way was always in the chase.
  • Doug Hale improved his rudder control and his sailing improved.

We sailed 32 races over the 2 day event and started with 11 boats on Saturday and had eight boats sailing on Sunday. The course was a windward / leeward with off set marks parallel to the shore line. The wind was from the same direction both days about 6-10 mph.

Skip Allen, on Saturday was in first place through 12 races when he stumbled on the shore line and both Skip and his computerized transmitter fell into Lake Johnson. At that point Skip had proved to himself and others that he can still race as well as build boats and he withdrew from the regatta. The hulls Skip has built over the years are still very much in demand. Skip vowed to be at the Elon Regatta.

Chris Kakavas sailed all day Saturday (22 races) and was in second place at the end of the day. Chris was unable to sail Sunday as he had some family commitments. Believe it or not family is more important than sailing!!!! Jack Wubbe is from Naples, Florida and this was his second EC-12 regatta. Jack has built other class boats - but we have him HOOKED on EC-12s. Winston Mathews also from Naples was in his first EC-12 regatta.

Frank Angel in addition to having the Nationals on his mind and calling Rick West, found out that the control board in his boat was loose and that was the cause of the erratic behavior of his boat. Frank did not sail on Sunday but stayed to take pictures, keep the Race Director on his toes and lend morale support to the rest of his team of skippers from the Piedmont Club. Frank laughed at our score keeping for 11 skippers on a computer when he is figuring out how to handle 56 skippers and the frequency problems for the Nationals.

Our committee was spear headed by Doug Hale, Jim Utley, Justin Flint, Mike Roe and Gerry Cobley. Jim really carried the majority of the workload. Mike as he called out the finishing boat numbers always called out words of encouragement to the finishers. It was a nice touch Mike. Gerry bought the trophies and hats. Seeing that he won first place we believe he should have spent more money on the awards. It was a great team - thanks.

Each skipper attending the regatta received a hat commemorating the event. The final standings for 32 races were:

1. Gerry Cobley
2. Rich Hawley
3. Jack Wubbe
4. Scott Vernon
5. Doug Hale
