Probably the best reading you'll
find in this report is the scoresheet. Not just 1st and
2nd, but all thru the list. 10 different positions were
decided by just 1 point. Despite the close scores, the
racing remained pretty clean throughout the regatta. There
seemed to be very little pushing, shoving, hollering and
screaming. All protests were settled out of court.
The event was supposed to begin
with some match racing and practice racing Friday afternoon
for the early arrivals. However, this was cancelled because
of high winds and some rain leftover from Tropical Storm
"Cindy". So we packed everything up and headed down to my
46' Chesapeake Bay workboat "Endless Summer" for a short
ride, a tour of a soft shell crab operation and then
seafood dinners at the marina's restaurant Dockside. Thanks
should go out to Robin and Michelle for keeping us all fat
and happy while there.
Saturday began with a light
Northwest breeze, which is rare for our area this time of
year. As long as this breeze held out, racing moved along
quickly, but when it dropped it was anybody's guess where it
would come from next or how long it would stay there.
Anyway, the day ended with close scores and everyone ready
to go eat steamed crabs! This years Saturday night feast,
also included a surprise birthday party for my girlfriend
Sara, to make up for last year's now well published
inadvertent faux paux.
Sunday began something like
Saturday did, but with maybe a little less breeze. We raced
anyway and at 12 o'clock pulled the boats out for the final
time. Before the trophy presentation, leftovers were cooked
on Bigdog's pondside grillin' machine (check out the picture
of that). The trophies themselves were made from some
pieces of 2" thick oak that came from my grandfather's boat
shop.
Now for the thank you's: to my
race committee Dr. Jarl Wathne and Jim Coll-you guys did an
outstanding job. To Doug for help with hotels,
registration, and trophies. Certainly to Sara for doing all
the shopping and for helping to put this together. As I
said to all the entrants in an email: "Our dinning room
looked like a commissary at an Air Force base". There was
plenty to eat that's for sure.
Finally, I 'd like to thank all
the participants and I hope to see all of you again next
year. Speaking of next year, we are planning on having it
the same time as this year's regatta was, which will be the
first weekend following the 4 th of July. Mark Rinehart
has already signed on for race committee duties.
Hope to see everyone soon.
